Alsunga Livonian Order Castle

Alsunga Livonian Order Castle, a quadrangular fortified building with an inner courtyard, was built in 1372. From the original castle, parts of the eastern wing’s cellars, the southern wing, and two defensive towers have survived to the present day.

This castle is a cultural monument of national architectural significance. Its complex was gradually constructed from the 14th to the 18th century and has been rebuilt several times.

The castle is unique in Latvia and beyond, as it is one of the few medieval castles that have partially survived in their historical form. In Latvia, most medieval castles today exist only as ruins.

The southern wing houses many culturally and historically valuable objects, including some of the oldest original interiors in Courland. Visitors can explore an exhibition on the history of Alsunga Castle within its rooms.

Special offerings include writing letters with quill and ink, performances by Suiti women, Suiti men, or Suiti bagpipers, and renting the castle tower rooms for wedding ceremonies or other special celebrations.

At Alsunga Livonian Order Castle, visitors can also enjoy a permanent interactive exhibition featuring: sound installations, interactive video projections, a virtual reality installation, informational panels, a large-scale brooch puzzle with brooch-eye placement, and a puzzle featuring the Suiti collar pattern. The exhibition was created as part of the ERDF project “Cultural Heritage and Artistic Creation Magnets along the Jacob’s Road.”

Castle Tower Room Rental for Events – 50 m²

The castle tower room is available for rent for events. It is suitable for small concerts, wedding ceremonies, workshops, masterclasses, and other activities.

The room is equipped with a projector, screen, sound system, and Wi-Fi/internet access.
