With Flying Fish and Gourmet Delights: Kuldīga Municipality Opens the Spring Tourism Season
From April 13 to 26, Kuldīga Municipality will celebrate the opening of the spring tourism season with a series of events that combine gastronomy, local flavors, and one of Latvia’s most unique natural phenomena – flying fish over the Venta Rapid.
The spring season in Kuldīga is designed as a continuous event cycle, allowing visitors to gradually explore the region while highlighting its main distinguishing feature – the interplay of nature, traditions, and flavors.
This year, the season will open slowly and enjoyably, with each weekend bringing something new to experience.

For two weeks, cafés, restaurants, and eateries in Kuldīga and the surrounding area will offer special fish dishes not found on their regular menus. Each chef will create their own version – for some, a single seasonal dish, for others, a full culinary offering.
The dishes may be traditional or completely unexpected – smoked, baked, marinated, or presented with a modern twist. It’s a chance to taste the proximity of the Venta River through flavor and to discover the creativity of local chefs.
“Catch the Flavor!” invites visitors on a small gastronomic journey – moving from one location to the next, enjoying unique impressions and flavors available only during this special event.

Two days when Kuldīga Municipality opens its doors like never before.
During this event, attractions, museums, workshops, farms, accommodations, cafés, and active recreation providers will welcome visitors. Many locations will offer special spring-opening deals available only during this weekend.
Over the two days, visitors can meet hosts and hear their stories, get a behind-the-scenes look, join short tours or demonstrations, taste local specialties, participate in creative activities for children, and try out active recreation options. The offerings will vary, but all will be available exclusively on April 18 and 19, making it possible to explore the entire municipality in a single trip.

The culmination – a day where nature meets travel inspiration.
Every spring, as fish migrate to spawn, they leap over the Venta Rapid, creating a spectacle that surprises even those who have seen it before. To celebrate this unique natural phenomenon, Kuldīga will host the Spring-Summer Festival – an opportunity to witness the wonder of nature and gather ideas for future trips.
During the festival, the city will host a local products market and fishing competitions on the Venta River. As part of the program, visitors can explore not only the tourism offerings of Kuldīga Municipality, but also those of Kurzeme and Latvia as a whole. Guests can meet service providers, learn about accommodations and activities, and try some adventures themselves – boat and SUP rides, children’s entertainment and creative workshops, art activities, and the “Golden Roe” attraction at Alekšupīte.
It will be a day to not only watch the flying fish but also to experience the atmosphere of Kuldīga and find reasons to return or continue exploring Kurzeme and Latvia.
To conclude the spring tourism season opening program, local eateries will be invited to offer late Sunday breakfasts, giving visitors the chance to enjoy a leisurely Sunday morning while savoring both the springtime atmosphere of Kuldīga and the creative flavors of local chefs.
In spring, Kuldīga and its municipality reveal their full beauty – a place where nature, flavors, and human hospitality come together in an unforgettable experience.
The events are organized by the Kuldīga Municipality Tourism Development Centre in cooperation with local businesses and partners.
