Bridge over the Alekšupīte Stream on Baznīca Street

The largest and most architecturally striking bridge over the Alekšupīte Stream in Kuldīga is located on Baznīca Street. It was built after the collapse of the Kuldīga Castle gate tower and mill in the first quarter of the 18th century. Like the other bridges over the Alekšupīte, it is shown on the 1797 city plan as significantly narrower, suggesting it was originally wooden.

By 1829, the city plan already shows a wide bridge at this location over the mill pond. The current bridge was constructed at the same time as—or shortly after—the stone bridge over the Venta River. The architecture of the two bridges shows some similarities, particularly the massive railings made of red clay bricks with decorative dolomite insets. The top of the railings was also clad with dolomite slabs. Most of these, however, have been lost and replaced with concrete. The original roadway pavement and sidewalks, covered with large dolomite slabs, have not survived either.
