On April 1, 2016, on the eve of Ēvalds Valters’ 122nd birthday, the environmental artwork “A Cup of Tea with Ēvalds Valters”, created by sculptor Oskars Mikāns, was unveiled in Kuldīga Town Square. The piece is dedicated to the legendary actor and public figure, Latvian Rifleman, and native of Kuldīga, Ēvalds Valters.
In Oskars Mikāns’ work, the legendary Latvian actor is depicted realistically—friendly, simple, yet noble. The monument is cast in bronze.
Ēvalds Valters was born in 1894 in Planīca “Eglenieki,” now part of Kurmāle Parish, Kuldīga Municipality, and passed away in 1994. He was a Latvian Rifleman, actor, writer, honorary chairman of the Latvian Riflemen’s Association, and honorary member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
Valters was a singular and unique personality. By unveiling this dedicated artwork, the great actor has returned home, to the place where he felt happiest. Ēvalds Valters once said, “I love Kuldīga so much that I only need to say the word Kuldīga, and I am already happy.”
According to local belief, if you want to live to be 100 years old, you should visit Kuldīga and enjoy a cup of tea with Latvia’s most famous centenarian, Ēvalds Valters.
