Environmental Artwork Teleport

Since 2013, the environmental artwork “Teleport” can be seen on Liepājas Street in Kuldīga, depicting Duke Jacob. The front of the artwork is made of polished and lacquered aluminum casting, symbolizing the 21st century, while the back reflects the 17th century, crafted from rusted cast iron. The creators of the artwork have designed a science-fiction-style historical simulation, which imagines Duke Jacob being transported to the present day—hence the name “Teleport.”

The famous Duke of Courland, Jacob von Ketler, was born in Kuldīga Castle on October 28, 1610, and was baptized and married at Kuldīga St. Catherine’s Church.

Duke Jacob ruled Courland and Semigallia from 1642 to 1682. During the reign of Duke Jacob from the Ketler family, Courland reached its peak in development and power.

Duke Jacob was spiritually gifted, diligent in achieving his goals, unwavering in his intentions, capable of accomplishing great things with modest resources, and carried a passionate love for his homeland.

Under his rule, shipbuilding rapidly developed, the first manufactories appeared, and agricultural production increased. The Duke built a large fleet whose ships transported grain, meat, butter, wool, timber, and all products made in his manufactories and the estates of Courland and Semigallia to Western Europe. The fleet was powerful and sailed not only across Europe but also reached Tobago and Gambia, where colonies were established, and goods such as sugar, coffee, and spices were brought back to Europe.

In his duchy, ships were built, paper and saltpeter were produced, fabrics, brocades, and tapestries were woven. Ironworking was well developed: nails were forged, anchors and bells were made, cannons were cast, and firearms were produced. Vodka and vinegar were made, and gunpowder was ground in mills. Canvas for sails, ropes, and hemp cords were also manufactured. The Duke focused on seed selection, breeding livestock, and improving land through reclamation.

Today, in honor of Duke Jacob, the Duke Jacob Annual Fair is held in Kuldīga every October, attracting traders and visitors from near and far.
