Ēdole Castle (temporarily closed)

Ēdole Castle is the only castle built by the Bishopric of Kurzeme (1264) that is still habitable today.

Throughout its long history, the castle has suffered damage from wars and fires several times, yet it has always been restored and rebuilt. Its current overall appearance was achieved only in the 1830s, when neo-Gothic façades were added in line with the tastes of that era.

The first floor of the castle, now referred to as the cellar, has undergone the fewest alterations over time. Almost all of the original narrow doorways with segmental arches and several small window openings facing the courtyard have been preserved. Of the old doorways on the second floor leading to the courtyard-side gallery, only two remain—one in the northwest wing and one in the southwest wing.

From the castle tower, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of Temple Hill, the mill pond and its island, the mill, the park, the ancient valley of the Vanka River, and the extensive manor complex.

At the Ēdole Medieval Castle Museum, visitors can explore a permanent exhibition featuring the White, Red, and Green Halls, the library, the round tower room, a children’s toy room, and rooms displaying a variety of exhibits, including sculptures, antique clocks, chests, and specially crafted handmade items, among other medieval castle interiors.

The castle also houses the Fairy Tale Kingdom, featuring 20 exhibits dedicated to Latvian folk tales.

Today, Ēdole Castle is known not only as a state-protected architectural monument with contemporary value and a legendary atmosphere but also as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and other events.

The castle and courtyard were featured in the legendary Latvian film “Emīla nedarbi”, and in honor of the film, the Emīls Market is held here every June, accompanied by traditional crayfish soup.

Event Spaces

The castle offers three halls for events:

• Small Hall – 45 m², suitable for intimate gatherings (up to 20 people). Various table arrangements are possible: one communal table or separate tables.

• Restaurant Hall – 110 m², suitable for larger celebrations (up to 60 people), small chamber concerts, team-building events, and workshops; equipped with a bar area. Seating can be arranged at communal banquet tables or separate tables.

• Banquet Hall – 170 m², suitable for wedding banquets, concerts, balls, and workshops (up to 80 people). Banquet tables can accommodate up to 80 guests, or round individual tables can seat up to 12 people each. Without tables, the hall can accommodate up to 100 seated guests.

Full catering is available (snacks, lunch, dinner, etc.), and the castle collaborates with external decorators. Overnight stays are also possible.

The castle is equipped with a projector, screen, and Wi-Fi/internet access.
