To revive the tradition of maintaining front gardens in the old town and involve local residents in their creation, a traditional garden in the style of the 19th–20th centuries has been established in the courtyard of the Kuldīga Restoration Centre building. The garden was designed by SIA “Baltā avēnija” under the direction of Rita Ķirķe, with participation from residents of Kuldīga’s old town.
The newly created garden is symbolically divided into three sections: a regular kitchen and herb garden; a partially regular flower and tea garden; and an irregular front garden along Mazās upes Street. Plant selection took into account seasonal resilience. Considering modern climate and weather changes, some historical plant varieties were replaced with available, hardy alternatives, while still following traditional garden principles. As in the past, the garden is designed for both practical and aesthetic use.
Kuldīga has a long-standing garden tradition, reflected in legends and historical records, but nowadays the tradition of garden care in the old town is less common, which affects the special atmosphere of the area.
The garden is regularly enhanced with educational events, inviting old town residents to learn about garden creation, suitable plant species, care conditions, and environmentally friendly pest control methods.
For the 2025 season, visitors can enjoy a themed garden route in the old town, “A Journey Through Time and Gardens,” highlighting five unique gardens, each with its own style and atmosphere. Explore and experience the charm of Kuldīga’s courtyard gardens, which delight visitors from early spring to late autumn, revealing the town’s deep connection with nature.
The 2025 garden route includes five locations:
Baznīcas Street 30
Courtyard at the intersection of Pētera and Ventspils Streets
Liepājas Street 17
Raiņa Street 19
Courtyard at Kalna Street 23
The route is free to visit. A guided tour is available for an additional fee.
