“Smilškalni” Homemade Wines

The “Smilškalni” farm initially focused on cultivating various berry bushes—raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, aronia, sea buckthorn, cherries, and other fruits—across approximately 10 hectares. Over time, the owners, Alvils and Ginta Elkšņi, decided to turn these berries into delicious homemade wines.

The wines at Smilškalni are made using natural fermentation from fruits and berries grown in the farm’s gardens and harvested at different stages of the season. Fresh berries are available during the harvest season, while a large portion of the produce is transformed into wine. Each year, the small winery at Smilškalni produces an average of 10–15 tons of wine.

Groups of 10 or more can enjoy a homemade wine tasting either in the farm’s gardens or at the winery itself. During the tasting, visitors will have the opportunity to sample at least six varieties of fruit and berry wines, all made from berries harvested in the farm’s gardens. Snacks are provided, along with a wonderful atmosphere and a tour of the rooms where the delicate and mysterious wine-making process takes place.
