Vini Curlandia

In the heart of Renda, you will find a unique Western European Vitis vinifera vineyard. This garden is the passion project of Mārtiņš Vāgners and serves as a historical testament to the times of Duke Jacob, when the tart Renda wine was a favorite at the Jelgava court.

The winemaking tradition in Renda was revived by Latvian-Canadian wine and grape enthusiast Mārtiņš Vāgners, who has been cultivating grapes for many years near Niagara Falls in Canada. He established new vineyards in Renda featuring premium Western European grape varieties such as Weisser Riesling, Chardonnay, Blauer Frühburgunder, Dornfelder, Müller Thurgau, Baccus, Gelber Muskateller, and others, with 6,000 vines planted over 3 hectares.

Every visitor is invited on a small wine-tasting journey, combining the flavors of Western European grapes with northern character. During the visit, guests can:

  • Listen to the historical story of Duke Jacob’s 17th-century adventurous attempt to introduce winemaking in Latvia,

  • Learn what Vitis vinifera is,

  • Gain insight into grape cultivation and wine production, and

  • Of course, taste the wines produced on-site.

During the season, it is also possible to taste the actual wine grapes.
