”Garīkas” Shiitake Mushroom Farm

”Garīkas” is the first farm in Latvia to start cultivating shiitake mushrooms, and it continues this practice to this day. As the owner Andris Vjaksa and his family acknowledge, shiitake cultivation is a delicate and quite unique process, unlike any other type of agriculture.

Shiitake mushrooms are grown on wooden logs, which are drilled with holes and filled with mushroom mycelium. These holes are then sealed with a paraffin mixture, and the logs are given a two-year incubation period. To create optimal growing conditions, the logs are soaked to initiate the production process. Mushrooms grown on logs are considered up to eight times more nutritious and flavorful than those cultivated on substrate.

Shiitake mushrooms are valued worldwide as a culinary delicacy, prized for their high nutritional content and their rich, creamy, nutty flavor.

The owners warmly welcome visitors, showing the farm and the black alder logs where shiitake mushrooms grow at different stages of maturity. Guests also learn about the mushrooms’ beneficial properties.

After the tour, visitors can taste the mushrooms or enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal prepared by the owners, to fully appreciate the unique flavors of shiitake. For those who wish to try cooking at home, fresh or dried shiitake mushrooms, mushroom blends for butter, mushroom powder, and even mycelium for home cultivation are available for purchase.

Guests who wish to stay longer are invited to spend the night at the Garīkas guesthouse.
