“Strauss un Kaza” Farm

Did you know that the largest and heaviest birds in the world—African ostriches—also live in the Latvian countryside?

“Strauss and Kaza” is the largest ostrich farm in Latvia, where visitors can learn about the unpredictable nature of ostriches, watch these impressive birds move with graceful strides, see how large their eggs are, and delight in the adorable ostrich chicks.

Ostriches can grow up to 2.8 meters tall and weigh on average between 90 and 130 kilograms. Compared to their body size, their brains weigh only 30–40 grams.

The ostrich is also the fastest two-legged animal, capable of reaching speeds of up to 72 km/h when running. One running stride can measure 3.5–4 meters in length.

The farm is also home to friendly goats that visitors can see and pet. And where there are goats, there are their main supervisors and herders—cats.

With prior booking, visitors can also take part in creative workshops, making various souvenirs from ostrich feathers and eggshells, such as dreamcatchers, earrings, or other handmade items.

A delicious meal is provided by the chef at the family restaurant on-site. Here, guests can enjoy not only excellent dishes prepared from local ingredients but also special delicacies available at the farm.

“Strauss and Kaza” is also an ideal stop for lovers of active recreation, as the long-distance hiking trail “Mežtaka” (Forest Trail) stages 91–92 pass nearby, and the farm is one of the attractions along a 47-kilometer cycling route that starts and ends in the town of Kuldīga.
