The Ēdole masonry church was built in the Gothic style in 1648.
According to legend, due to religious disagreements, the owner of Ēdole Manor, Werner Behr, was killed by his own son. The church is said to have been built by the other son, Johann Dietrich, who ordered to be buried beneath the church threshold in order to atone for his sins.
The church was conceived as a place of penance. The Mannerist-style altar, as well as the pulpit and the noblemen’s gallery, are finished in black with gilding, while an inscription on the altar serves as a reminder:
“Remember death.”
