St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Alsunga
The Alsunga Church was built around 1625, during the transition from late Gothic to Baroque style. It is a brick cruciform building with a single tower and a tiled roof. In the 19th century, the church was expanded sideways, giving it the cross-shaped form seen today.
The church was funded by the nobleman Jan Ulrich Šverin and dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.
For several centuries, the church served as the main place of worship for the Suiti community, supporting their spirituality and cultural identity.
Inside the church, visitors can see works by the Dutch woodcarver Johan Mertens, created around 1715.
Beneath the church lie the walled-up tombs of the Šverin family.
