Stafenhagen House
This wooden house is over three hundred years old and is linked to a legend that in 1702, during the Great Northern War, Swedish King Charles XII stayed here.
Since the old Order castle had been destroyed by the Swedish army, the king was supposedly given lodging by Kuldīga’s burgomaster, Wilhelm Siegfried Stafenhagen. In the house’s corridor, visitors can still see a huge wooden chest (2 × 2.5 m) said to have been left by Charles XII. This chest can be viewed by anyone interested even today.
The house also features the largest masonry fireplace in Courland.
