Hike to Veckuldīga Hillfort.
A relatively extreme but extremely exciting route for nature observers and seekers of unusual views. On the way to the hillfort, the route follows right along the waterline of the Venta River, tracing fishermen’s paths overgrown with tall grass. It crosses many small springs that keep the ground wet year-round and create muddy patches with clay sediments.
Rubber boots will definitely come in handy here!
At the foot of Veckuldīga Hillfort there is a picnic area where you can catch your breath after the most physically demanding part of the route. In ancient times, Veckuldīga Hillfort stood right in the center of lands inhabited by the Curonians and along the Venta waterway. It was once the largest center of the Curonian land of Bandava. Today, visitors can only imagine its former grandeur.
The return route runs along the steep bank of the Venta, where walking is much easier, your feet stay dry, and the views are no less impressive. Another recommended stop on the way back is Melnā Kolka. This name refers to a bend formed on the left bank of the Venta with a 15-meter-high riverbank cliff, offering a beautiful view of the river and the opposite shore.
The outward journey may take about 2.5 hours for a person with average physical fitness, while the return trip takes about 40 minutes.
