Ostrich Watching

A very scenic 47 km route takes you along small country roads past fish ponds in the direction of Pelči.

In Pelči, you can view Pelči Castle from the outside, considered one of Latvia’s early castles, featuring a blend of Art Nouveau, French Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Renaissance architectural elements.

If traveling in late May or June, we recommend stopping at the “Ziedoņi” Peony Garden in Pelči, home to a collection of over 400 different peony varieties.

Continuing toward Snēpele, the route passes several forest-surrounded small lakes, perfect for a swim on hot summer days. Along the way, you can enjoy the true peace and quiet of the countryside with beautiful rural scenery.

In Snēpele, a stop at Snēpele Manor is recommended, featuring an exhibition honoring the painter Indriķis Zeberiņš, along with other historical sights. The village also hosts the weaving workshop “Vēveri”, where visitors can observe the weaving process and purchase handcrafted textiles.

Midway along the route is the ostrich and goat farm “Nornieki”, where you can explore the farm, meet large and small African ostriches, and cuddle the goats. The farm also features a family-friendly restaurant “With the Birds”, ideal for a meal and recharging before continuing your journey.

On the return, the route includes short exploratory sections along small forest paths and through abandoned properties. Some segments feature dusty tracks in dry weather. Around Āpu Lake, you may even spot a hedgehog along the trail!
